How to turn off iPhone 12 and require pass code to open/activate

Upgraded from iPhone5 to iPhone 12. With the older phone, a pass code was required to open the phone. The new phone required a passcode for setup but so far we have not figured out how to turn off the phone and lock it so that it cannot be used by anyone. Phone works great but so different than the 5. Where is the on/off button? And when it has been idle for an hour or so, why is there no need to unlock it and enter the pass code? So confused and need some help. Thanks.

Have you completed the setup of Face ID? The second that you pick up the phone and the iPhone faces you then it unlocks the iPhone for you (using FACE ID) so that you can SWIPE UP and get to the home screen. During the unlock process, you should see a Lock at the top unlocking to confirm that the iPhone just unlocked.

The passcode that you setup will be used as needed and will be asked to be input when the circumstances arise. To Lock your iPhone the minute you press the SIDE BUTTON or leave it idle:

Open Settings ➔ Face ID & Passcode ➔ Require Passcode : Set this to Immediately.
