Apple offered a free one year subscription to Apple TV but after I signed up and went to watch my first movie they wanted to charge me. What gives.?

What movie was it?
The Apple TV+ subscription only includes Apple's original content. It does not include movies or shows from other studios or producers.

The offer is for Apple TV Plus, which includes Apple originals only. If you back out of that section and browse the main TV app then you will be seeing other content from the iTunes store (which requires a rental or purchase).
Your subscription is for Apple TV +
Apple TV + is Apple Original content. It’s a channel found within the Apple TV App. The shows included in your subscription will have the tv+ logo on them - those are free with your subscription
There are other channels and iTunes content (Movies, TV Shows) in the TV App that requires payment - in other words there is no Apple TV Plus App. It’s free Apple TV Plus not free Apple TV.
