Mac Mini M1 Freezes / Hangs / Crashes / Reboots

Hi there,

I'm not sure where to post this exactly, but my Mac Mini M1 will regularly (two to three times a day, maybe more) freeze. The screen freezes, any sound stops and input devices are unresponsive. After anywhere between 15 seconds and a minute the machine reboots and I get the alert that the machine has restarted because of an error.

I am primarily using this with Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop apps but this has occurred with none of the applications open (Spotify, web browsing).

I'm not sure if I should be concerned it is a hardware issue, or if it is just a software bug. I'm using Big Sur 11.1 and my Mini has 16GB.

It is a pretty regular event and I wondered if I wasn't the only one experiencing something similar.

Mac mini, macOS 11.1

I think (I hope) I found the issue. Yes, it seems to be a cheap USB 3 hub plugged into one of the mac USB A ports. Since I disconnected it and put my mouse and keyboard on a USB C hub, it seems to be behaving. Time will tell. It seems odd that Apple would launch a product where using a common hub in a USB A port causes the machine to have a stroke. I'll report back if anything changes.

I'm on my 2nd M1 Mac mini. Spent 10 days on the phone with multiple apple senior support and they could not fix the first one. Just got a brand new one yesterday, and it's doing the exact thing you said. I'm really thinking the M1's aren't ready for prime time yet. BTW, reinstall of OSX etc did not fix this problem. For me, it still freezes in safe mode, and on the new one, it happened before installing ANY 3rd party software. It's doing it out of the box.

Insideoutus! Nooooooo! but that sounds so familiar. Are you using an external peripherals, or USB hubs? I have a wacom tablet in a USB hub, but it happens without the hub plugged in.

I've gone through the reinstall but haven't tried safe mode because it feels like a hassle as this is supposed to be my main machine. TBH I think they're stalling for time. I'm sick of this, it's done it three times in the space of one hour. Despite my best efforts at regular saving, I'm losing time and work.

I don't know about you but when I am able to save the error report when it reboots the error ALWAYS contains the same "Break 0xC472...". I've told Apple but they haven't asked for the error report or tried to understand it. It's clearly the same issue, reoccuring.

Oh! I wondered if that was my problem as well. I have an Anker USB 3 hub (10 port) plugged in. Connect to that are an SMSL DAC, Wacom Tablet, Logitech webcam and HP printer. Plus the occasional HD.

I had some peace and quiet when I stopped using the hub, but it still occurred — perhaps not as much.

I'm a bit loathe to buy a new USB C hub to test it, like you say it's outrageous that a hub (from Anker, they're not some weird and exotic producer) that works fine with every other Mac it comes into contact with hobble the fancy new M1s.

Also, it isn't ideal to use my computer missing half the peripherals I require to do my job...

Yes. I will probably take mines back and it’s been about a week. I contacted Apple and sat on the phone about this twice. The solution was to take it in and get it assess or the operating system reinstalled. But I see I am not the only one with this issue. It’s never been this bad with any of my macs in the past. I’ve had it crash with regular apps like safari. It’s crashed with different obs apps. It has crashed with the sims 4.

And although the App Store has sim city offered by aspyr and the App Store says sim city is compatible with m1 mini, it really isn’t. I was able to get to the opening page of sim city and as soon as I hit start, the app crashes. The worst part about the freezes and the crashes is that most of the time, the entire computer freezes. There is no opportunity to force quit bc you can not click outside the app. I am forced to either hit the power button after a while or sometimes, to my surprise, it shuts off on it own. Not restart just shuts itself down entirely, lol. Odd.

I want to keep it, because I feel like eventually it will be, and it is, ahead of the technological curve in terms of processors. Loading times on sites are super fast. However, the constant freezes and complete system crash make it not worth it for me. The time I use to restart the computer, takes up more time than using an older gen Mac on the internet. Growing up in the era of when the computer shuts down before you get to save—this is reminding me too much of my youth; and in a bad way, lol. I really don’t feel like waiting on this one. For all the other apps and all the third party apps that I use (even though the apple provided apps still freeze as well, yet they say it’s supposed to be better), to catch up. I got work to do. Work that I hope I can save before my computer shuts down automatically. Honestly, such a bummer.

After 5 months it looks like Apple somewhat addressed my issue. Or at least it doesn't completely reboot my MBA-M1. When the Mac locks up it reloads the webpage instead of locking up and rebooting after a couple minutes. Shows an application memory error. "your computer has run out of application memory". ... So memory leak - Javascript problem? I have to keep another browser handy so when a page with Javascript that Apple doesn't like, I have to use that other browser. I have had 3 Macs in 10 years and never "had" to rely on another browser to browse the web. My son's Intel MBA never has this issue.
