Mac Mini M1 Freezes / Hangs / Crashes / Reboots

Hi there,

I'm not sure where to post this exactly, but my Mac Mini M1 will regularly (two to three times a day, maybe more) freeze. The screen freezes, any sound stops and input devices are unresponsive. After anywhere between 15 seconds and a minute the machine reboots and I get the alert that the machine has restarted because of an error.

I am primarily using this with Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop apps but this has occurred with none of the applications open (Spotify, web browsing).

I'm not sure if I should be concerned it is a hardware issue, or if it is just a software bug. I'm using Big Sur 11.1 and my Mini has 16GB.

It is a pretty regular event and I wondered if I wasn't the only one experiencing something similar.

Mac mini, macOS 11.1

I think (I hope) I found the issue. Yes, it seems to be a cheap USB 3 hub plugged into one of the mac USB A ports. Since I disconnected it and put my mouse and keyboard on a USB C hub, it seems to be behaving. Time will tell. It seems odd that Apple would launch a product where using a common hub in a USB A port causes the machine to have a stroke. I'll report back if anything changes.

Hey, my new MacMini M1 16GB has two Problems

1. Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Keyboard (Apple Black) often loose connection... the screen is connected via USB-C, besides I have no usb devices attached

2. I sometimes come to my sleeping Mac but cannot wakeup it properly, just to see a Error Window

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe00113030dc): "/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleSmartIO2/AppleSmartIO2-105/AppleSmartIO/AppleSmartIODMA.cpp:void AppleSmartIODMA::_setConfiguration(AppleSmartIODMAConfig *):547: REQUIRE failed on endpoint 102: _channel_state == kSIOChannelIdle"

Debugger message: panic

I use a LG widescreen curved screen, heard somewhere that this is a known problem to apple and we should expect some kind of firmware update...

I would not recommend to do a clean install with a system, that is so "young"....

My M1 Air freezes, locks-up & reboots after a minute or two while browsing a certain website. It's a school website. It seems like a JavaScript/ flash problem. I tried it on some M1 pro's at Best Buy, on that same webpage and they froze and rebooted too. Page is https://www.greenwoodk12.com. it's when I click on menu and then swipe back and forth. Sometimes it takes a few minutes 🤯

Auto delete Safari history daily also doesn't work 🙄

My M1 Air has had Big Sur clean installed twice, since I bought it in January. I believe it has something to do with the way it handles JavaScript, I see issues during other JavaScript times. The whole not auto removing history in Safari is another issue, as it also doesn't work when set to auto delete daily on my son's Intel Air, with Big Sur also clean installed. I am the only user and my son has his on his own iCloud account.

Hey iNVisO,

My monitor runs through Mini DisplayPort to USBC adapter and the monitor needs to be unplugged and reconnected everytime I restart, otherwise it doesn't detect it — kind of frustrating since I've never experienced this before with any non ARM Mac.

Re #1 I have experienced a weird delay in the response to my bluetooth keyboard (same as yours — Apple Black). It happened all of a sudden. Restarting did nothing for it, but I deleted the bluetooth connection and then reconnected it and that solved it. Was super annoying as I normally use keyboard shortcuts in Adobe apps and I kept getting tripped up and moving wrong objects or layers. I was so relived it solved the issue.

My 2017 Macbook Pro just died. Thunderbolt ports shot. Got it in 2018. About $500 quote to fix from Apple Store so I sold it online. Used it a lot but didn't abuse it. I don't think the general build quality is what it used to be. My 2013 Pre-Retina Macbook Air has outlasted the Pro. They can speed the chips all they want but if the hardware can't handle it...

I'm a bit reluctant to reinstall Big Sur — it was a (box) fresh install, although I did run whatever updates had arrived since.

Also, part of me wonders if it isn't related to it being an early release of the new OS. My current solution is save often and keep my fingers crossed.

I'll keep my eyes out for the error message next time and post here.
