If you are wondering how to show the desktop spread with your thumb and three fingers. If this doesn't work go Applications > System Preferences > Trackpad > More Gestures and select the 'Show Desktop' square.

Can you explain what you mean with "clear the screen"?

When you open an app, it will open and occupy the desktop screen. If you quit the app (Command + Q), it will close and the desktop screen is there.
