icloud backups automatically overwrite previous backups

In the Apple support pages for 'Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch' it states, for example:

"Locate and manage backups stored in iCloud

On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier:

  1. Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences.
  2. Click iCloud.
  3. Click Manage.
  4. Select Backups."

But... in my experience ONLY the latest backup for each device is kept (it overwrites any previous backup).

Am I correct?

I think that should be made clear, because the wording led me to expect to find a history of backups (since the plural had been used).

iPhone XR, iOS 14

This is by design.

If you want to store multiple backups to choose from, create iTunes/Finder backups. They can be archived instead of overwritten.
