Big Sur (11.1) returns to Login screen

Brand new iMac Pro; so completely fresh install of 11.0.1 - then successfully updated to 11.1 on date of its release.

Works perfectly in most respects (spinning TM icon in sidebar seems common).

But a couple of times when I've left the machine unattended for an hour or so and powered up, I come back to find it at the main Login screen.

Garish pink with choice of users and password; rather than a quick tap on the space bar (or nudge to the mouse) with a familiar desktop picture and password prompt only.

I can't see any evidence of a crash or restart in the Console logs… but I wouldn't like to be paid to find one - no expert in log reading :-)

Anyone else, please; any ideas?

TIA!

Hello Mark,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

We’ll be happy to look into this with you and see what we can find out together.

Have you seen and tried any of the steps found in If your Mac restarted because of a problem?

What about How to reset the SMC of your Mac? Have you tried that step?

Have you tried testing in safe mode to see if you get the same behavior? How to use safe mode on your Mac if you need it.

What about setting up a test user account to see if you get the same results when leaving the Mac for a while. See Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac if you should happen to need it.

Let us know how it goes trying those steps, and if we can help further.

Take care!

Thanks for your reply, Karina184.

This is a brand new machine which came with no third party apps installed. It was supplied directly by/from Apple three weeks ago with 11.0.1 freshly installed. As soon as 11.1 was released, I upgraded (successfully) to that. No other faults. Quick. No crashes etc.

It is a sporadic/intermittent fault. It does not happen every time I leave my iMac Pro (not in Sleep mode). Please would you advise the most expeditious way to have a senior engineer look at the logs and diagnose the fault and best way to fix it?

Thank you!

Hello Mark,

You are very welcome!

Since this is intermittent, we understand wanting to have the logs examined. Apple Support Communities is a community of Apple users reaching out to help one another. For assistance with Apple Support Advisors, click on Get Support

If you would like to continue here, we will certainly do our best to try and narrow down what might be causing the behavior.

Cheers!
