The others tab under Macintosh storage shows an unusually high number of 185GB. My applications is 15GB, documents is 35 GB. Any explanation of why this could be the case.

Try something like OmniDiskSweeper for a GUI to get a good look at itemized file size and location:

Apple support helped me resolve it. I had done a couple of screen recordings. These large 50GB files were lying in one of the screen recording folders.
I have done all of the above. The others is not clickable, similar to system files. So I do not have access to it. The trash is all emptied.
The only way to resolve it was by going through finder window and individually checking each folder. Found this under Library.
