I want to upgrade to AppleTV 4K from 3rd ten but the plug on the HDMI cable is too large. What do I do?

Possibly you are looking at a different port. The HDMI port is the same size on all models Apple TVs.

No. You can use a HDMI 1.4 cable just fine. The HDMI connector is exactly the same regardless of the HDMI version.
