how do i change my Apple ID to a new ...@icloud.com one?

I have an existing one, but just want to change it. When I try to add in the new email I want to use, I get the error message that I can't use the @icloud.com as I already have one.

If you created a new @iCloud.com email address, you created a new Apple ID. Apple IDs can't be merged.

You can't remove/change @iCloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com aliases.
