Tried to instal Big Sur but a message said that I couldn't. Later found a list of the compatible models and 2013 was the oldest that could instal 11.1. I'm now trying to find a site for OS 10.15.7. No luck so far. Thanks for your help.
Your suggestion worked for the OS High Sierra install. When the reboot was attempted the tone sounded and the password was entered. The Apple logo came up and nothing else happen. I tried disk warrior but that didn’t show any problems. I’m at a loss what to try.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
I took the computer in and the tech said it might require the updates before High Sierra to be installed. A call later from the tech said the hard drive was trashed and needs replacement. No way for me to check that out. It's 8 yrs old though.
I think you're going to have to have Apple look at it or try installing the OS to an external drive.
Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download High Sierra through the link provided.

10.15.7 won't work on your Mac; its maximum OS is High Sierra.

I tried the link for High Sierra but a message comes that says the link is damaged and can't be used to install the update.
Install any security updates in the Mac App Store's Updates tab. If needed, choose Applications from the Finder's Go menu, throw the installer away, and download another copy.

I tried to start in the Safe mode with the same results. Just an Apple logo in a blank screen.
👍 Appreciate your time and suggestions! Probably something I overlooked. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
