Extra Items in Legend in Numbers

I have a bar chart in Numbers with 8 stacked values. Problem is I have 10 items in the legend - first two colored squares at the top of the legend. I don't know what they represent and can't figure out how to get rid of them.

Very odd.

My only guess is that there are a couple of hidden columns to the right of your data that were selected when the chart was created. Empty columns with no label in the header row would produce results like those shown in your chart.

You could hide the two blocks with a rectangular Shape, filled white, with no border and no shadow, and resized to just cover the two extra markers, Use Arrange > Bring to Front if it slides in behind the blocks. Grouping them with the chart would also be useful, but considering that they and the chart are quite different objects, Grouping may not be possible.

Well, no hidden columns. I found the problem but still can't figure out how to deal with it. Turns out I must have inadvertently selected a couple of single cells while in data reference edit mode. They were above the data area but in the same columns. I managed to get rid of them by dragging them into an empty column and then deleting the column, but the two unwanted boxes are still there in the legend. Guess I'll just live with it, but it's perplexing not to be able to fix it.

Is there any way in Numbers, like there is in Excel, to examine the details of each series and its legend?

thanks for our help.

There is a Series button in the Cahart Inspector. It offeres some information regarding a series, but there seems to be a Catch-22 that will come into play with your chart issue—The specific series to inspect is chosen by clicking on one of its data points on the chart—difficult (to say the least) if there's no data in the series.

And clicking on the legend symbol for a series brings forth the Style settings for the chart display.

Thanks Barry. I thought I had included a screen shot but it obviously did not get through. I'll try again.

The top two colored squares in the legend are meaningless and do not relate to anything. Can't figure out where they came from. There are only 8 columns in the spreadsheet and all are represented correctly on the chart (the top color of the bar, orange-red, has a close-to-zero value so it's hard to see, but is related to the third legend item from the top). When I "Edit Data References" those 8 columns, and-only those eight, are selected.
