If not what is the best external burner to get?

No, Mac notebooks haven’t had optical drives for years. Apple makes a USB SuperDrive that works with a USB-C adapter.

Use a simple adapter. The SuperDrive draws 900 mA of current, a standard USB-A port provides 500 mA which isn’t enough - docks don’t work unless they state they support it. I have a $10 nonda dongle bought on Amazon and my SuperDrive works with 6 different Macs.
Unfortunately, no. Apple haven't included optical drives in their lineup for some time.
Having tried this today, the Apple USB SuperDrive does NOT work with a MacBook Pro 13 M1 running Big Sur (11.1)
I'm using a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock with Dual 4K HDMI adaptor. I tried plugging the SuperDrive into the USB 2, and the USB 3 ports on the dock - the drive doesn't work on either. Maybe I need another brand of USB-C adaptor / hub.
I wanted to rip an audio CD. The CD doesn't mount at all. The drive rejects it.
The SuperDrive mounts as expected on an older late 2014 MacBook Air.
Update: I tried another adaptor. The Apple USB-C to USB-A + HDMI. The SuperDrive worked as expected.
