Adobe Flash Player removal

Happy New Year to all.

We here are running the up-to-date versions of 'Sierra', 'Safari' and 'Firefox' on our desk-top Mac.

We've followed Adobe's web-published directions about removing 'Flash Player' but can't figure out what to do/how to do it when we reach this step:

"... Delete the following directories:

    • <home directory>/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash\ Player
    • <home directory>/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash\ Player".

Is it necessary to delete those directories to achieve the security-benefits of removing 'Flash Player' as 'Adobe' has urged us all to do? If "yes", we'd appreciate help about how to do the deleting.

Thanks & cheers.

Those are configuration and temporary folders used to store Flash information. They aren't hurting anything really but you might as well get rid of them. I guess if you were really paranoid about anybody stealing your computer seeing which Flash files you viewed 3 years ago then you might have a good reason to get rid of them.

To get to the user Library folder drag down on the "Go" item in the Finder menu bar, hold down the option key and a "Library" folder should appear. A "/" in the directory path means a folder so the first one is telling you to go to the Preferences folder in your Library folder and then the Macromedia folder inside that, etc.

Thank you Limnos.

What's confusing me is that after getting into 'Preferences' inside 'Library', I can't find there any folder called 'Macromedia' and using the search-tool doesn't find 'Macromedia' there either. I do in 'Library ... Preferences' see a folder called 'Flash Player' and that folder is empty. (I'm assuming throughout that folders are denoted by the blue-folder icons on the 'Preferences' listing's left-hand side.).

Coming to 'Caches' in 'Library', I see a folder called 'Flash Player' inside one called 'Adobe'. Clicking on 'Flash Player' reveals 'AssetCache' and 'NativeCache' respectively. Clicking on 'AssetCache' shows one line of letters & numbers (all meaningless to me) and clicking on 'Native Cache' shows 'NativeCache.directory' which states '... Zero bytes' (so I'm assuming that folder's empty too).

H.r.t. your general remarks about getting rid of the directories in question, I'd like to carry out Adobe's uninstall steps as far as possible but it looks from what you say that the risk of not doing their step #9 ("... Delete the following directories") straight away (if at all) doesn't seem great to cause fluster.

(P. S. Apol's. for my sloppy editing when sending out my starter message; there were just 2, not 3, bullet para's. for quoting and my message did display those 2.)

Thanks and cheers again.

Hello and thanks again Limnos.

I've looked at '9to5mac.com' as you suggested and it seems from the relevant posts there that (annoyingly to some) various 'Adobe' relics apparently survive the uninstall 'Flash Player' process (presumably the process described by 'Adobe' at helpx.adobe etc. you mention).

Your "... try this way" info. has been used here, and the 'Macromedia' folder is not viewable on this 'Mac'.

I'll be watching out for posts on my topic, until then holding fire on changing/deleting anything further on our 'Mac' and assuming (via following helpx.adobe etc.) that we've already done enough to avoid possibly lingering security issues that Adobe's been warning about to people who don't uninstall 'Flash Player'.

Further thanks & cheers.

Dear readers who are picking up at my immediately previous post in this string, please note a clarification point re. my latest response to Limnos: "... (via following helpx.adobe etc.)" should have reiterated that we here haven't yet followed Adobe's point #9 "Delete the following directories".
