mac air connects to router but browsers says no internet

suddenly I have no internet on my mac air. It shows connected to wifi but the browsers (2) both say no internet available. I have checked everything I can think of and tried different internet sources with no luck. All internet sources are working on other devices.

Create a New User:

What happens when you create a new user (for temporary use)? Are you able to access the internet with that user? If so, then it is a mis-confirmation somewhere in your current user.

Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not load upon boot, and damaged files (i.e. caches) are rid of and fixed, if existent. So,

As for when to hold shift:

  1. Shut Down: the Mac
  2. Wait: 30 Seconds:
  3. Power Up: the Mac
  4. Hold Down: shift key when you hear the boot chime.
  5. Proceed with the login
  6. Wait: 30 Seconds:
  7. Shut Down: the Mac
  8. Wait: 30 Seconds:
  9. Power Up: the Mac
  10. Login: as Normally

"mac air connects to router but browsers says no internet: OK when I create a different user profile I get the same thing. However after doing that and going into safe mode internet works. Comparing the two profiles I have discovered that Norton security is trying to start but can't when in normal mode and is stopped from trying to load in safe mode. Therefore I think NS is my problem in regular mode. How do I stop it from loading on start up?"

Remove it as a Login Item (in Safe Mode):

Login Items sometimes make your Mac run much sower upon boot. So rid of the ones you do not need. Perform this in Safe Mode, because in Safe ModeLogin Items do not run, and broken files (i.e. coaches) are often fixed to how they should be.

  1. Start By: Booting into Safe Mode (Hold Down: shift key upon boot).
  2. Log In: As the user
  3. Go To: System Preferences
  4. Select: Users & Groups
  5. Select: Norton
  6. Select: Login Items (Top-Right)
  7. Select: [Each Login Item]
  8. Press: "-" for whatever is unneeded

Uninstall Norton:

Use an Uninsaller: Security Software is not needed on a Mac. It just gets in the way on a Mac, and this is a pure example of how and why. So, contact the Developer (Norton), and ask which uninstall to use. Note that just Dragging & Dropping it to the Trash will leave files laying about. So, perform the uninstallation using an Uninstaller, and no other way. Get the Uninstaller from Norton, and nowhere else, as getting it elsewhere, you may end up installing unneeded software (malware or spyware)

Thanks for the help. I know Norton well as I have used it for years on my IBM machines. So I downloaded their total file removal program from their site on my other machine and transferred that to the mac via USB. Ran it but still had same issues. Going to Users and Groups Norton was not listed. So thanks to your suggestion to run in Safe mode I was able to get my internet working (in Safe Mode) and get to Norton's web site and reinstall the Norton Software. That fixed my problems and internet is now back in normal mode. Thank you so much for the help as I am not a big Mac user and don't know yet how to access some of these things.
