contact icon gone from Home Screen
contact icon not on home screen, list appears when tap phone icon. do I need it on Home Screen? cannot find icon in Library. not deleted on purpose.

It sounds like you aren't able to find/see the Contacts app icon on your Home screen, and you've even looked in the App Library. Have you tried to search for it by dragging the screen down and using the search field to find Contacts? Also, do you know if you accidentally removed the Contacts app from the phone? You can make it available again by going to the App Store:
Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12, iOS 13, or iPadOS device or Apple Watch
