Ripping a DVD that I own

I have a new laptop that does not have the internal DVD/CD drive. In order to play a yoga video that I purchased, I have to haul around the external DVD drive. Is it possible to burn or rip the DVD onto my MacBook Pro so that I can just grab my laptop and the DVD will play wherever I take it? If so, how? Assume I know nothing about the steps to do this. I do know where disk utility is on my machine but no clue what it does. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.1

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities bridgette511,

We see that you have a question about getting the contents from a DVD on to your MacBook Pro. That's a great question, and we'd be happy to help.

First, depending on the DVD, you might not be able to do this if there is or isn't anything on it the will prohibit you from burning the DVD to your Mac. If there isn't anything prohibiting you from the DVD itself, take a look at the articles below that can help with what you're wanting to do.

Create a disk image using Disk Utility on Mac

Burn CDs and DVDs on Mac
