No charger with phone purchase?

Why buy a phone from Apple when you can’t charge it? Here is your new iPhone and a wire that goes to nothing.

This was well publicized and shown on the website what comes with the phone.

You can use previous cables & chargers. You can buy a new USB-C charger as well.

You can also use a wireless charger

This was widely publicized but I for one do not own a USB-C adapter, so I would be a bit ticked off about it as well. Apple tried to sell the public on the idea that we’re thinking about the environment, blah, blah, blah, but in my opinion, which many here would not agree with, it was just another way to cut cost and save them some money.

Apple estimates that there are over 3 BILLION chargers and cables out there in the world that will end up in landfills, so encouraging people to reuse them makes a lot of sense. They will all work with the iPhone 12, and if you charge overnight, every night, as you should, it doesn’t matter how fast it charges. For the rare person who needs to fast charge during the day you can get a USB-C charger pretty cheaply if you don’t already have one (I have 3, from other, non-Apple products that came with them), or use an iPad 12 watt charger that will semi-fast charge it. You can also get a MagSafe fast wireless charger, a Qi 7.5 or 15 watt wireless charger, or the 20 watt charger made for the 12.

Which brings up a secondary reason: why should it automatically come with just one of the half-dozen or so charging options? I’d bet that if it came with a charger half or more of the users would never use it, and would get a wireless charger, which is much more convenient.

comparing the manufacture of millions of chargers vs hosting this community doesn't even make sense.

as far as I know, this community preceded the first iPhone anyways. and imagine the millions that is has helped.

you can be angry, doesn't really matter to me..

I don't necessarily agree that they should have left the charger out either, mostly because they only recently made the switch to the USB C cable for iPhones. So IMO that stands a bit contradictory to the idea that everyone has one. But that doesn't change the way it IS. and if you don't think other phone manufacturers will start doing the same thing.. well just wait and see I guess.

Before flying off the handle over this, I believe that they actually reduced the price slightly of the iPhone models this year.

At least the one I went for, iPhone 11 Pro 256 GB vs iPhone 12 Pro 256 GB, was $50 cheaper this year.. Which pays for 2 chargers.

If your plan is to wait and see what they do with the 'iPhone 13'.. you might as well just switch now, obviously i can't see the future, but highly doubt Apple will go back on this.

And what about the extra packaging that is needed for people who don’t have a charger? Any numbers on this?

Why releasing a new phone every year with minor improvements? Why are they doing this if they care about the environment? If they want, they can release a great product that includes everything. But instead, they choose for releasing something, and a few moments later they release something with a a minor ‘improvement’. Like for example that it’s 1 mm thinner. Or that the camera is just a little bit better. Why releasing an iPhone every year? Instead of every 2 or 3 years? Do you also have numbers of this? What this does to the environment? Because older phones are not used anymore?

I am just going to save the environment and do as long as i can with my iPhone XS Max. Just as Apple whishes - saving the environment.

That is my point exactly. Frankly, it’s not Apple’s problem that there are a hundred bazillion chargers in landfills. When they run the EPA, then that will be a different story.

Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to buy iPhones, iPads, Macs and other Apple products. They make wonderful devices. That doesn’t mean that I like all of their business practices and that I believe some of the crap that they feed the public. I will never believe that saving some money didn’t come into their thinking on this decision.

To be clear here, I am not arguing with you or with Lawrence. I have a great deal of respect for the work that you guys do in the forums. I am just tossing in my 2¢.
