10.13.6 upgrade

I recently got this Mac from my MIL. It was supposed to be scratch and dent, but I suspect refurbished. I wiped it clean, and it is now operating on IOS High Sierra (10.13.6). Every time I try to update the software, it shows there are no updates. When I try to go to the Apple Support Site to download BigSur, it tells me that it cannot connect to the App Store. How can I update my OS? *Please be kind as I am not very computer savvy. :)
