How do the batteries go in the keyboard? I have no indication. I think that might be my problem.

For an Apple keyboard, the AA batteries go in Positive end first. There is a picture of that on the keyboard itself all the way underneath the round part.

Are you talking about some kind of external keyboard? The most modern are charged via usb cable that fits into a slot in the back. The older ones with batteries have a round door at the top left end which you unscrew to change them.

Go to the keyboard manufacturer's site. They likely have a picture or description about how to insert batteries into their keyboard.
