Turbotax 2020 won't load

My iMAC is running on macOS High sierra 10.13.6 and I just purchased Turbotax 2020 and it won't open

because it appears I need at least 10.14. I have checked for updates on my iMAC, which is only 2 years old

and per there are not updates available. How can update??

iMac, macOS 10.12

The App Store Updates page only informs you of updates available for the OS you are running.

Installing a newer OS is called an upgrade.

Which OS you can upgrade to will be governed by which model and year your mac is.

Click on the  top left of your screen click on About This Mac to find out the year of your mac.

For Mojave or Catalina,

Open Safari and click on this link,

How to get old versions of macOS – Apple Support

Go to Check Compatibility to see if your mac qualifies for the OS upgrade you want.

Then go to the Download OS section and click on the OS you want to install.

If you want to or are able to install Big Sur, open Safari and click on the link below.

How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.

Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.

https://roaringapps.com

Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

Connect your mac to your router via cable rather than rely on WiFi.

Do not use your mac while it is downloading

and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ then it is detecting a previous download of the install app

go to the Applications folder locate Install macOS ******.app.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart, click on the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

If you are considering upgrading to Catalina or Big Sur be warned they do not support 32bit apps.

Your Mac is probably running 32bit apps and these will need to be updated to 64bit apps,

some updates may be free, some may be paid. Use this app to discover which apps you have

are 32bit, https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/ then contact the developers of the software to see

if they are providing 64bit updates or alternatives.

Hi

I Had similar experiences. I loaded TT 2020 in January, and finished about 40% of my taxes, when about 2-3 weeks ago I started gettin funny messages suggesting problems with the TT. Finally this past week (2/15/2021) TT would not open and the file was not reachable. Contacting TT and spending 1 hour waiting, 1 hour talking to an advisor, did not produce any results. Contacting Apple support and spending 3 hours with a very nice support person with Indian accent, he suggested to open a other USER on the iMac. This allowed TT download and it works, importing over Tax return worked, but updating and saving that File DID NOT WORK. Tried many ways to save and reopen, but no joy. The Tax return could not be updated and saved.

So the issue of why the normal USER did not allow TT to open, while the new USER did work, but did not allow the saving of the file.

Not sure where to go now, but will try Apple again, as it appears that the latest 11.2.1 has objection to TT!

All help appreciated.

I have had similar stories with TT and OS Big Sur, however, during the past week I have been able to complete 5 different tax returns running TT 2020 Deluxe all the way to "ready to print" which for me is the end because I always save the file as .pdf and print from that. My continuous success occurred after updating to OS 11.2.1 Before that, I tried the un-install/re-install procedure 3 times. I did the uninstall process very carefully, making sure I found every possible relevant file to delete. After the third attempt, I was finally able to load TT, however, I did get a blank (no description) TT error message. If I ignored it, I could proceed. After loading 11.2.1, I did not see this error message any more. I'm not sure how to connect the dots on this between the OS update and subsequent TT updates. I also don't know if anybody has replicated my experience. Note: All of this was done in the original user platform. I considered using the "test" user partition set up by Apple, but it sounds like that might have been problematic.

I’m on the Big Sur version and couldn’t get TT2020 to install properly. I downloaded my version from Amazon but it would hang up when I tried to open it. TT kept trying to communicate with their servers and I would get stuck at the point. Therefore, I restarted my system in safe mode, opened TT and the app was able to get the updates loaded. After importing last year’s info, I saved it and restarted the Mac normally.

Read the fine print. TurboTax is incompatible with Mac Big Sur OSX 11.2.1. Use online TurboTax and pay before you may print and or E-File. H&R Block fine print also notes incompatible with Mac Big Sur.

If you have an iPad another procedure is download free TurboTax App and you will be doing your tax return on line and you must pay before you may print or E-File.

Running Big Sur 11.2 on 2013 model Macbook Pro. Turbotax 2021 seemed to load ok but when I was almost completely finished with my taxes "whoops seems we hit a snag" message came up and then the app crashed. When I try to restrart/reopen the app it briefly flashes on screen and then nothing. Tried to uninstall app but drag and drop to trash not working for this app. Attempting to contact Turbotax but so far no luck. Help!

I agree about the level of support from Apple. I was impressed on how much they wanted to resolve the problem. The new user idea was helpful. In the end, I was directed to escalate the issue with TurboTax and to also ask them about an "uninstall program" for TurboTax 2020. I Googled that and found this link with detailed instructions from TurboTax.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/installing/help/remove-uninstall-turbotax-for-mac/00/26050

It's not a simple procedure but I'm going to try it tomorrow. I'm also concerned about how long just reloading the program will actually work. I think I am going to use the "download" version I purchased from TurboTax yesterday - rather than reload the original CD version I purchased from Amazon a few weeks ago.

So, in my continuing search I've discovered that some MacBook Pros 13in late 2013 models (which is what I have and which is the oldest MacBook pro that is listed Big Sur compatible) have been "bricked" when trying to update to Big Sur. I had no idea what that meant so I googled it. It turns your computer into a brick or a doorstop or whatever else you can do with a heavy useless object. At least that didn't happen to me. I'm letting the program that I could open yesterday sit in the new user account for a couple of weeks with the hope that something either on the TurboTax end or the Apple end gets updated to fix the bug. It's only February so plenty of time to finish the taxes later.

Yes I did find a number of Intuit/TurboTax items in the ~Library -- although not in every folder mentioned in their procedure. Also, I forgot to mention, since I had problems with 2019 in my recent investigations (in addition to 2020) I decided to delete those files as well. I found both 2020 and 2019 files in the Library. Although I don't need it, 2018 works fine -- go figure. Since my default User partition is so questionable, I'm also thinking of doing the tax returns in the test User partition. If that fails, I'm probably going to bail out of Turbo Tax altogether this year (even though I've paid for two copies) and purchase an alternative product. As they say, "fish or cut bait."

My computer just updated to Big Sur 11.2.1. I did try to launch Turbotax and it checked for updates, and I then got the message an error occurred. It then froze. I have not tried to reload -uninstall and reinstall - to use turbotax. I have to many other areas where Big Sur is not working. In Safari, when I select some web sights, I get the message I am not connected to the internet. And when I do get some sites web pages, and then select an item on that sight-page, it says I am not connected to the internet. Also, some application like TextEdit, under Services, the screen image capture does not now show. And Image capture in other application where it worked in the past, does not show under Serivces. FireFox for the most part is working but slow. And of course, my version of Word and Excel are no longer Supported. Pages comes up, but the formats are different and documents have to be re-formated, etc. MacMail is not connecting to my aol and Outlook mail sites. I have been using Macs since the first one, before the Fat Mac came out. And at the institution I worked. was responsible for getting thousands of Macs on campus and sold to students. This Big Sur release is the worst thing Apple has done!

Several have suggested that you should un-install and then re-install TurboTax and its related files. Another post list the items to un-install. I have done this and still no luck. This is all using TT under Big Sur.

Un-installed Turbotax and re-installed. This time I got to the message where you have to select “I Agree” to the License. Then the message in a box came up stating “It may be that your internet service is down ... .” I had done the re-install using the internet, so it is not down. Then I select the OK at the bottom of that message.

Then I only get the blank box with TurboTax 2020 at the top - center, and Cancel at the bottom right, and a blue dot in the center. All menu items are dim, i.e. not selectable.

I select Cancel at the bottom right and it stoped TT. Then re-start and the message just comes up again. Viscous Cycle.

Big Sur is giving a number of other problems, such as Safari not working correctly.

I have been using TT since Mac-in-Tax, and and Macs since before the Fat Mac. I have never seen anything as bad as this OS before.
