Configuration for Elderly

My father lives in an Assisted Living facility - he has 'locked' his iPhone 8 a few times now, which can be quite a process to unlock/restore (made more challenging by Covid restrictions, and that I live 1000 miles away). Looking for alternative configurations for a new iPhone 11. Thinking:

1) Create a new Apple ID as the device owner

2) Set up phone with parental controls, add my father (and his Apple ID) as a 'child', and configure to help eliminate chance of device lockups

3) Set up family sharing

Questions:

1) Is this the best approach, or am I way off?

2) Best way to transfer configuration data/apps from current phone to new phone (as 'child' user). Currently has Consumer Cellular, which is sold at Target

3) How to facilitate this 'remotely' (I have a brother who lives in the same town)

Thanks everyone!

The phone will need a passcode periodically if you enable Face ID; when it restarts, and if it has been unused for about 8 hours (the exact idle time varies). And, unless you lie about his age, you cannot set up a child account for him. So the only way he can use it is with no access security at all, which sounds kind of risky in a group environment.

So I don’t think that is a good solution.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm less worried about security than him having access - he accidentally changed his AppleID password in mid-December, and his phone has been locked ever since (my brother has been working with Apple to unlock the device). No security would be an option, except he could still accidentally mess up the settings. If we cannot configure the iPhone in a way that prevents him from getting locked out for weeks at a time, then we'll have to look at something other than an iPhone.

Under parental controls, Apple Support documentation states: "Make sure to choose a passcode that's different from the passcode you use to unlock your device. To change or turn off the passcode on your child's device, tap Settings > Screen Time > [your child's name]. Then tap Change Screen Time Passcode or Turn Off Screen Time Passcode, and authenticate the change with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode."

So, it looked like I could potentially set up the phone without a Passcode. Combined with facial recognition on the iPhone 11, was thinking he might not ever need a passcode. Not certain how logins work on phones set up with a child account - are you presented with a user to authenticate against? Or, with facial recognition, will it automatically open his 'account' if facial recognition is configured solely for the child's account?

Ah, yes, forgot that part. The primary use is FaceTime - his iPhone has an app that also streams audio to his hearing aids. Even with audio streaming, he struggles to understand without the visuals. The other primary use is accessing the Internet, primarily for news sites.

We could set up someone at the facility to aid in phone management, as long as he doesn't have the ability to send the phone into orbit.

You may want to look into an MDM.

We use Miradore at my company.

They have a free version, though I don't know how comprehensive it is compared to the enterprise product.

It should, however, allow you to do things like clear the passcode, etc.

(I have no financial interest in them, and I'm not saying that it's the best choice out there, but I'm relatively satisfied with the enterprise version and am just putting this out there as a possible option.)
