How do I get battery percentage to show (in numbers) on an iPhone 12 mini running iOS 14 in/by the battery icon to the top right corner of the screen? NOT, good grief, a space-wasting widget on the home screen.

you can't on a Face ID model.. it's either the Home Screen widget or pull down Control Center.. Or ask Siri
You can also swipe right and access Today View and put the Battery widget there so it doesn't take up your Home Screen space
