For iOS 14 you need iTunes 12.8.2.3 or better running on OS X 10.11.6 or better. See How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support if required.
Assuming a suitable version of iTunes is in place then in Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text, paste it into the dialog box and press enter:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources
Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognize your device.

With High Sierra the syncing process should be as described in Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support.

Apologies I was not totally clear in my reply
Opened finder window OK
Connect usb cable to iphone and to Mac
Itunes opens and no sync
Your process indicated iphone should open in the Finder window..it does not
Seamless fix Thankyou
Now that iphone is now showing in MacBookPro iTunes, it will not sync due to not enough memory but can no longer see where I can select only the tunes I want to Sync with iphone
Using Catalina OS; iPhone connects, shows in side bar but SYNC does not show
Again apologies
I had to load a new drive a couple weeks ago and am using High Sierra 10.13.6 not Catalina as previously stated
Do not get the Sync Prompt window even though Iphone is showing in iTunes left hand window
Have you selected the device, and then set sync selections?

yes I select the Device but Sync is not exhibited
Success; all Sync up and rechecked
Greatly appreciate your patience and persistence
You're welcome. 🙂
