Notifications are not complete once off-Internet and reconnect again

I am using the most updated ios 14.3 version and I found a problem that troubles me a lot.

I usually turn off completely the Wifi and mobile data connection for a long period of time (4~5 hours) for my job. When I reconnect the Wifi or mobile data after finishing my work, I found that the notification center only pops up the LATEST ONE SINGLE notification for each app and there is no notification history I can follow what happen during that 4~5 hours.

For example, one single notification for the email app appears immediately once I get connected to the Internet, telling me I have an email received. But it turns out that actually I have several emails received when I am off the Internet connection! That makes me miss a lot of important emails when I did not know the notifications are not complete in the very first place.

This happens for every app. I have turned on the notifications for every apps already. What should I do if I want iphone to show the complete notification history?

Thanks a lot!

Hi kwk17!

I can see why notifications maybe missing if the internet is cut off completely, perhaps the server now only hangs on to the for a certain amount of time before being rejected.

Did they used to come in fine before the update?

I usually keep mine connected to some extent whether WiFi or cellular so haven’t tested it.

If it worked fine before, there’s a few settings I’d check. But first, I’d try a few steps to hopefully save you some time, if you haven’t already:

Force a restart:

https://support.apple.com/guide/iphohttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205296

Enable Airplane Mode > Settings > Airplane Mode, then disable > Restart and test.

Check for carrier updates and other cellular settings, and even reset network settings:

This may disable any VPN software you may have installed that may also be responsible.

Reset All Settings:

https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/return-iphone-sethttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205296

It is also possible a single settings is responsible, although I’m sure if you’re receiving one notification but not others Settings like Screen Time may not be the cause, or Do Not Disturb, etc. but I’ve been suprised before.

Other than that, a few Settings do come to mind to check out:

Background App Refresh:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202070

Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

Is this on for the apps you’re expecting notifications from?

Also, just wanted to confirm that your iPhone wasn’t in low power mode, although this is for processes that use much more energy, comes to mind:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205234

Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.

Another relevant setting to check, (Even though you have no connection at all), maybe WiFi Assist:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205296

Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > WiFi Assist.

Is this setting on or off?

Hope one, some or all of those steps and questions she’d some light on it, thanks!
