Can't read my purchased books on the Books app

Am I missing something? I have a number of books that I purchased at the Apple Store and I can access and read them on my iPhone. However, when I try to open and read them on my Macbook pro, I just see the cover and can't open the book to read it. I deleted them and reloaded them, synced them with my iPhone and still no luck. Does Books actually work on a mac?
