Migration Assistant quit unexpectedly, to New M1 Macbook Pro 13" from MacBook Pro 15" 2016

Bought new M1 MacBook Pro, am trying to migrate from 2016 15" MacBook Pro, go through first steps of Migration Assistant, I choose what to transfer, it starts and always ends with "Migration Assistant quit unexpectedly." (on the new M1 Pro) Using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable. Tried numerous iterations of ports. Both are on AC power.

Any ideas? Both rigs have latest OS 11.1 updates. Antivirus is off for old machine. No AV on new machine yet.

Hi JohnRenne,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities, and congratulations on the new MacBook Pro. It sounds like you're having some trouble migrating everything over to the new MacBook Pro because migration assistant is quitting unexpectedly, correct? If so, we would love to help see if we can get the issue resolved for you. Let's go ahead and try restarting both MacBook Pro's, then trying again and checking to ensure you're following the steps we've linked or you below.

Transfer your data to your new MacBook Pro

Hi,

I did restart after each attempt. Disabled antivirus on 2016 MacBook 15”. Tried with Thunderbolt in each port on each machine. Followed instructions. After about ten attempts, the new M1 started losing the cursor, could still select items just could’nt see the cursor. Required restart to get cursor visible again.

Bought to replace a malfunctioning 2016 MacBook Pro with keyboard problem and bendgate screen problem, which i could not get covered,t was “not backlight”, but had intermittent screen loss in bottom one inch, went away sometimes if you rocked the screen.

Going to return, I just can’t afford to take another chance on a very expensive choice when it could fail within a couple years. I’m not that well-off. My 15” has an awful feeling keyboard and i have to mash the keys to successfully type. My 17” unibody from 2010 is flawless and still rocks. As does my iMac mid-2011.

So sad, I was really stoked. Have had every phone, ipad, and watch and they all have been flawless. We are an Apple family.
