Apple Upgrade Program with US Cellular

What are the perks on the apple upgrade program. I am wanting to upgrade my phone from the 8 plus to the 12 pro but am unsure if I should just buy the phone or do the upgrade program as I am with a carrier that is not connected with apple. (US Cellular) so I would have to get the unlocked phone and don't know if it would be worth it or not?
