Problem after updating Apple ID

I've just changed my Apple ID to my new email address. Phone (11pro) working ok, if I log in on an Apple website I get the auth code on phone.


Problem is in Settings, under my name it says "Update Apple ID Settings" where it says:


Apple ID Password

Enter the password for

"the email it shows here is old ID"


When I put password in I get Verification Failed An unknown error has occurred.


Any ideas?

Some things you can try. Do you have access to another WiFi network where you can try? That has worked for several people.


Try a restart.


Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch         


Try a forced restart.


Reset Device.

A factory reset won't remove the old ID.


If necessary, if you are the original owner, contact Apple. Apple can remove the Activation Lock if provided the required paperwork. Either take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store (if it has reopened)
