Apple Music Equalizer

What is the function of the "Preamp" option on the Apple Music equalizer? When should I turn it on/off? And how high should the volume adjustment be. I stream to a Marantz receiver, and can't tell the difference when it is on or off, though the volume seems to make a difference when on.
