Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0 Problem

I installed the Multi-Touch Trackpad Update to get the Inertial Scrolling and Three-Finger Drag Gesture but I don't see that it worked. The install said it completed successfully but after rebooting the Trackpad preference pane looks like it did before. Except there is a button at the bottom to set up a bluetooth trackpad.
Has anyone else with a MacBook Early 2009 model got it to work?

Hey guys. I've been having the same problem since the update and it's been driving me NUTS. I can't count how many times I've accidentally removed icons from the dock because the trackpad just freaks out and thinks it is dragging when it's really not.

I think I found a temporary fix until Apple releases something more official. I haven't had enough time to PROPERLY test it, but I can attest that I have not suffered this problem again after applying this for at least 24 hours(unheard of before I applied it as it happened every 30 minutes or so earlier).

I went through /var/db/receipts and found the .bom archive for the update, opened it with pacifist and examined the contents therein. It looks like it changed the obvious things.... replacing AppleMultiTouchDriver.kext, updating the preference panes for trackpad(to support the new options there, etc), the frameworks, etc etc.

I compared a number of the files to my install disk's /System/Library/Extensions and found that the AppleMultiTouchDriver.kext wasn't present there until 10.6.3 or 10.6.4, yet I could still use all of the associated gestures, inertial scrolling, etc WITHOUT it.

So... my fix was simply creating a new directory in root called backup. (/Backup). You could create this anywhere, really... I just put it into root so that if I had to drop into single user mode, I could easily navigate to the directory. After backing up the file to the backup directory, I simply deleted it from /System/Library/Extensions.

Upon rebooting, I checked to make sure all gestures were still working. Interestingly enough, 3 finger drag and inertial scrolling STILL work even without this kext. My theory is... when Apple replaced the AppleMultiTouchDriver.kext in this update with some updated code...something wasn't quite right. Now, if you REALLY wanted to keep this kext around... you could, in theory, extract it from an earlier version such as the 10.6.4 combo update and put it back into /System/Library/Extensions, but...as far as I can see... it has absolutely NO bearing on the multitouch gestures, 3 finger dragging, inertial scrolling, click to drag, tap, etc. Everything is working as it should be WITHOUT the annoying intermittent draglock problem.

Just my .02. If it works for you... great. If not, we're no worse off as you can just put the kext you backed up back in /System/Library/Extensions and then repair disk permissions. I should note, if you do NOT repair disk permissions after putting the kext file back in... you might suffer some strange system issues or a completely borked trackpad since the system won't have access to the file. Make SURE you open disk utility and repair the permissions if you have to reinstall the kext! (There's another way to do this through terminal, but I'm going for basic instructions here.)

I hope this helps someone else who is having this awful problem. I suspect Apple will release an OFFICIAL fix for this soon, but in the meantime...

=]

One final note-- If you find that double tapping the trackpad to drag doesn't work anymore... go into system preferences, trackpad and see if 3 finger drag is on. If it is.. simply change it to swipe to navigate(my preference) and check off the click to drag and draglock(optional) options under "One finger". If you prefer to have 3 finger drag, that still works, too.

Let me know if anyone finds this to work OR has issues/borked systems afterward. I'd like to see if the fix is universal.

Thanks!

Can't seem to edit previous post. Grrrr....

I should ALSO note that people with macs that didn't originally support multi-touch gestures...(aka anything older than early 2009) should probably NOT apply my fix as it might break the support for MT for those older trackpads...

Can't say for sure as I haven't researched it enough. But.. just wanted to throw that out there. The two macs I tested this on were both just about brand new(aka purchased in 2010).

I'm having an issue with 1 finger clicking, like I really have to push down to get it to recognize my click.

I'm having the same problem.. Sometimes I have to click several times to get it to recognize my click, and other times it works fine. I have tried rebooting, returning the trackpad settings to default, slowing down the double-click speed, and nothing has worked. The problem started yesterday and I installed the trackpad update August 3rd.
