Iphone XS Max not connecting with MacBook Air

I have an Iphone XS Max and MacBook Air. All up to date with IOS 14.3 and Big Sur 11.1. Every time I connect the two with a lightening cable, it repeatedly gives a File Not Found message (like hundreds of times so I have to disconnect) and keeps flicking in and out of connection, so can't even press the OK buttons. Any ideas.

I've tried loads of different cables, so it's not that.

Open the Finder app and a new window and then connect the device. It will show in the sidebar.
