Moving Ipod triggers home button action

I've had an ipod touch for years and got used to how it works. I just bought a new one, and one thing really annoys me: when I move it from a stationary position, it responds as if I had touched the home button. I am used to picking it up and then pressing home in order to, e.g., restart a paused podcast, or just to check the time. But since I'm used to that, I often pick up the new ipod and press home, which now (since it acts like "home" was pressed *twice*) moves me to the login pad, so I have to login first before seeing the time or restarting my podcast. Worse, it only does this about 90% of the time (it may depend on how much or quickly I move it). Is this just the way new ipods work, or is this a setting option I can turn off?

I've just been informed via chat with an apple "support" person that this feature, which exists on all new ipods, cannot be turned off. Thanks, geniuses, for presuming that you are helping by adding a feature which does something which I do not want it to do, and cannot be turned off. This is like your brilliant "let's assume the world is all bluetooth now and we don't need audio jacks anymore" move.
