If I already pay for some Apple TV channels through my cable service, can I use my current login and not have to pay Apple also?

It's down to your Cable provider and their arrangements with the providers.

Many Cable Providers will let you access Apps for those streaming services for free, by signing in with your cable provider account.

The actual channels inside the Apple TV App, are separate from standalone Apps and require a direct Apple Sign in.

I was just on the phone with apple, they didn’t seem to know and said I should just use the app outside of Apple TV, but I’ll try your suggestion also. I know I’ve done it like you are suggesting with other apps like hbogo now hbomax, showtime go, etc

It depends on what the apps allow. If you see “sign in”, try that and if it’s supported it will say sign in with your cable provider
