Whenever I try to update to 10.14 Catalina the preferences window says "null" and displays the Upgrade Now button. I have tried upgrading in Safe Mode but it displays the same message. Any ideas?

Try this Link using only Safari and choose Catalina 10.15. Be sure to use only Safari in the next page also as FF / Chrome will not work. Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Apps Store to Download Catalina. Once downloaded it will attempt to Launch the installer - Quit it. Then strongly suggest at that point mack a Time Machine Back up. For future usage - copy the Install Catalina App now in Applications Folder to an External drive - incase it is needed in the future.
Now, disconnect all external drives restart computer in Safe Mode and run the Installer. Note - the installer will disappear once it has run thus the external drive copy.
