Big Sur upgrade failures

late 2015 iMac 17,1 running OS 10.15.7. Software Update shows Mac OS Big Sur 11.1 from there it appears to download normally but when it finishes it shows the system is still OS 10.15.7 and goes back to the macOS Big Sur "Upgrade Now" window. This has happened twice. How can I make it work?

Make sure you have 35.5GBs of free space on the drive, try while in Safe Mode.

Also for me the upgrade fails, on two computers. No 1 is a MacBokk Pro Retina 13" late 2013, No 2 is a MacBook Air 11" from 2014. Free space is enough on both computers, information on Apples site is that ugrade should work on these computers. But it fails. Is the information on Apples site not correct? Earlier upgrades hav worked without problems (today I use MacOS Catalina v. 10.15.7).
