iPhone Xr calls drop on 2018 Highlander with Toyota Entune - 1/12/2021

I'm looking for advice from Apple or anyone who has had success in resolving this problem: Calls made using Bluetooth in 2018 Highlander are dropped after less than 2 minutes. Calls continue on phone but not through car speakers. Once this happens, I can not initiate another call because the car does not recognize my phone. The DCM has been updated in the car (1/8/2021) and phone has all updates (running version 14.2 currently), Entune was removed from my car apps (I don't use it). According to the threads, this and other issues are chronic. Toyota dealer has admitted that this is widespread issue with 2018, 2019 cars with Entune and owners with iPhones. The dealer has now told me that this is an Apple problem - not theirs. These issues became chronic with my phone and car beginning in June 2020. The phone is the same vintage as the car.

Calls can be made and continued if contacts are not synced to car; however, it defeats the purpose of hands free and is unsafe. Once contacts are synced, then the problems begin.

Does anyone have a success story or solution? I'm very close to giving up my iPhone because of this.

Thank you.

Hi Coldpawsme,

Thanks for providing those details. Sometimes the case can interfere with your Bluetooth connection, depending on the material of case. Are you connected to other Bluetooth devices at the same time you're connected to your car stereo? This would include an Apple Watch or AirPods.

Let's also forget the accessory(Car) in Settings > Bluetooth > [accessory name] > Forget This Device, and then set it up again if you hadn't already done so.

Cheers.

Hello Coldpawsme,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Do you also experience this dropped connection when listening to media or is it specific to phone calls? Have you tried toggling on and off Bluetooth in Settings > Bluetooth? Are you currently using a case on your iPhone? If so, does removing the case help at all? Do you lose Bluetooth connection with any other devices you connect your iPhone too?

Kind regards.

Thank you for responding.

The connections are dropped with I'm making calls - after 15 and 45 seconds. There are no issues with streaming music. The tech at the Toyota dealership told me to try pairing my phone with the car and to NOT sync contacts. This meant that I'd have to punch in a phone number. I tried this on a test call and it worked; however, the minute I synced my contacts, it reverted back to dropping calls again. I even turned off the "automatically update contacts" option on the car and it didn't make a difference.

I have a case on my phone. What would removing the case do?

I've also tried pairing the car with another iPhone and nothing gets dropped if contacts are not synced.

Thank you. I have reset/rebooted, done the Hokey Pokey and even turned the vehicle around and no luck. The phone does not disconnect from any other bluetooth device I use, including those not specifically designed for an Apple product. It's only the car and only when I am talking on the phone. I can play music until the cows come home but can't hold a conversation. The case I have is one suited for the phone I have and has no metal or magnetic parts on it nor do I have it resting in a metal/magnetic holder in my car. I've paid attention to incoming text messages, etc. to see if any of the symbols used in the message are interfering somehow (the dealer tech told me to go through all of my contacts and delete symbols to see if that made it better so I deleted all of the +'s in front of the +1 area code and still nothing but dropped calls), but I haven't gotten any text messages while I've made calls.

At first I blamed cellular dead spots but the calls were being dropped in areas that I know are not dead spots nor were they dropped at the same time and in the same locations.

Any other thoughts?

Thank you.
