Why iCloud gets in the way with Whatsapp ?

My son is trying to get Whatsapp running so we can chat and talk while I am abroad. This is the first time I see that hassle - iCloud asking to restore discussions and blah blah blah ... all the f.... preventing us from COMMUNICATING. I have an iPhone myself. I talk to many people with iPhones. What the ... is going on here ? It is already difficult and we try to avoid the scam of telecom operators but why iOS gets in. the way ???... I don't give a ... about iCloud taking care of Whatsapp in whatever way. How do we get rid of that barrier ????

I travel abroad all the time and use WhatsApp. It always is a flawless experience.

Question- Do you change your phone number when you are abroad by using a local number and SIM? If you do then that is the reason why WhatsApp asks for verification and possible loading the discussions again from iCloud.

If the above is not the case then please describe what you are seeing about iCloud accurately. Thanks.

Gee, I indeed replaced my SIM today for a local number .... What is strange though, I dud not have the issue with my wife, and both just installed Whatsapp today.

even though Whatsapp was usec today with my wife, it is only a few minutes ago that the app prompted ne to change my former number for the new one and sending a sms to verify (like, after midnight as if it would have waited the “nect day”.

does that make any sense?

WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not your device. And, for security reasons, if your phone number changes previous communications are no longer accessible, and you must sign out and set it up again.

Indeed, noted after several hours (after midnight to be exact - perhaps a ''daily update'' or something) that Whatsapp asked me if I wanted to change phone number X for new phone number Y, sent de code to confirm. Since then, no more issues (and I told my son to click ''ignore backup'' as well, so it's one or the other - but it's now fixed...

Weird though : not able to send invites to (at least one) non-iPhone user ...

Are you sharing an Apple ID with your son?

icloud isn’t doing anything. WhatsApp is trying to restore you chat history from iCloud, probably because you are sharing an Apple ID.
