iMessage on Macbook Pro

I can't sign into my Apple ID it says "unknown error has occurred" and I've tried resetting everything - I can pull up a side window that shows the last time I was able to see messages but it never signs in - I keep getting "Type in password for this iCloud account if you want to continue using messages but the email that it shows is my original Apple ID that I no longer have access to and haven't used in probably 5-6 years.

Hi bjack731,

We understand you're trying to change the Apple ID you're using for the Messages app. We're happy to help.

To remove that old Apple ID, open the Messages app then, select Messages up in the menu bar and Preferences. In Preferences go to the Accounts tab and remove that old Apple ID account you no longer want to use. Once that's removed, you can go ahead and sign in to the new Apple ID account you want to use for Messages.

Use Messages with your Mac

We hope this helps. Take care!

Can you open Messages by booting into the Safe Mode?

Safe Mode - About.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin.

Sorry for the incredibly late reply - I'm not able to log in or even get to a preferences page (in safe mode either) it just says an unexpected error has occurred. The problem is that the email it's trying to use to sign in I changed a few years ago - the account is the same it's the email that's different and for some reason my current password won't work. - I even get an iCloud pop up asking to sign in with that older email and I can't get rid of it or reset the password cause I don't have access to that email anymore AND the account is changed to my current email.
