Is there something I need to do aside from unfollowing a discussion? My issue is resolved, and the discussion has become irrelevant to me. Yet I continue to receive Emails about new posts in that discussion after clicking the button to unfollow.

Not exactly broken but maybe a little gut-shot.
What I do is go to my profile (click your user name and then "View profile.") On the right side of the profile page, in relatively small print, is the link, "Edit Profile & Preferences. Click that.
Lower down the resulting page is this:
If I check those options as shown, I do not get flooded with e-mails but still get status e-mails, which I want.
I think the problem is that although I click Unfollow, it gets automatically reset to Follow. There are two threads that I am trying to Unfollow, one started by me. One was removed from my subscriptions, but the one I started keeps changing back to Following. Can't I unfollow a conversation that I started?
That function is broke, you can try clicking on the Following button to unfollow, refresh the page and repeat this loop until it stays on Follow.
No, it is broken. Your approach turns off all Following emails which I want. So how about we compromise with it is being given last rites?
