how can I download an older version of iMovie

So recently, I opened up my wife's iMovie library (which is on an external HD) on my computer. I didn't realize that her version of iMovie was 10.1.1 on High Sierra. My version is 10.1.12 on Mojave. Now she cannot open her library on her machine because my machine saved her library in the new version.

We updated her OS to Mojave so that we could update her iMovie to 10.1.12, but the only version of iMovie that we can find on the app store is 10.2.2 which require OSX Catalina.

We CANNOT update to Catalina as we have versions of software that we use for work that is not supported past Mojave.

How can I get previous versions of iMovie (specifically 10.1.12) to show up in the app store?

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

Try this procedure:

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

I'm not understanding. Your wife had iMovie 10.1.1 on her computer at one point, no matter whether she downloaded or purchased it. (It's free, so there would have been no "purchase" in the literal sense.) Assuming that she is still using the same Apple I.D. that she used when she acquired 10.1.1 she should be able to update to a version that is the highest version that Mojave will run. You need to drag it into the trash (but don't empty the trash) and then go to the purchases folder. The procedure should work even if the old version had been deleted, as long as it was on her Mac at one point in time. If she has changed her Apple I.D, that would explain why the old iMovie isn't showing up.

I agree with all the points you make. She SHOULD be able to upgrade to the latest version that is compatible with her OS (now Mojave) She SHOULD be able to just go to the app store and hit update, and it SHOULD be under purchases, since it's part of OSX which she downloaded from the app store, but she cannot because Apple has either hidden or removed previous versions prior to 10.2.2 from the app store.

I did still try what you said, moved iMovie app to the trash and checked the "purchases" on her app store. No dice. Still not there under purchases. I think this is because she has never downloaded it from the app store. It is included in the OSX package.
