Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

Come on, now! It is a harmless bug in the boot process. It doesn’t affect use of the phone in any way. Remember that the iPhone is a COMPUTER even though it is called an “iPhone”. It’s really just a very power pocket sized computer that, by the way, can also make phone calls. As the phone starts various processes are started sequentially, and the display goes on and off as this occurs. The fix, when it comes in a future release, will be to turn the display off during the boot process. However, you will know in your heart that even though you don’t see it, the Apple logo is going on and off in the dark, so to speak, as the phone starts up.

Sadly because sometimes Apple just don’t care is the answer (but not always).

I had the logo flash the first time I switched it on from brand new out of the box on day 1, when I upgraded in March 2021 just gone and soon after was kept busy with the usual reseting the phone dilemma and other mis-directional stuff just to lead you on - in some cases is a diversion tactic.

On day 1 after powering device on and seeing the flash, I had then proceeded to restore from my backup which I was hoping was a one-off. Later I was advised to reset the phone which seems to be the standard response to most problems. This was not pleasant as it took 8 to 9 hrs to fully restore from my backup (this time using iTunes for the process) and was sadly all for nothing!

Eventually I had a person to person appointment at the Genius Bar and the genius representative said that maybe I should try factory reseting it ‘as from new’ with no back up restore - this was unacceptable as I would lose too much info and besides it wouldn’t fix the issue as the logo flashed from day 1 when switched on from out of a sealed box. Furthermore he said he never knew of, nor seen the logo flash issue, so I showed him there and then (there was some silence). Additionally I showed him the 2nd issue Inwas facing with the very subtle yellowish / urine-tinted colour on the display which doesn’t give a neutral white. I put my iPhone XS next to my new 1,399 price tag iPhone 12 Pro Max where the iPhone XS has exceptionally neutral white whites on the display - again there was some silence before then telling me everyone’s perception of white on the display is different. I said for a dead-neutral true white it has to be devoid of any hint of colour whatsoever, so that it is just white and as result all the other colours are more balanced and pop. The Genius support technician was just leading me on really and had no real intention whatsoever to help fix and resolve the issues on this particular occasion with one of the most expensive consumer phones on the planet right now.

Turning to forums doesn’t always help either, as some Apple brown tongues can give the impression they're fighting against your general distress over problems with an Apple product you’ve invested heavily in. Although some can sometimes help.

At the end of the day it’s probably standard procedure in any company not to admit liability, that there is a known fault/malfunction (unless forced to in a court as last resort) as this would entail a tsunami of returns that any company would want. So they ‘bide time’ and attempt to fix or find a solution on a per customer basis, or string that customer along for a time.

Of course it must be pointed out that if it’s an isolated faulty unit incident that you have, then Apple are very good with fixing/exchanging the device - I’ve usually always had very good experiences with support at the Apple retail shops and credit must be given here. One main reason I’ve always had iPhones (mostly) is because if ever the iPhone develops an individual fault, you don’t have to wait days or even a couple of weeks as a visit to the Apple retail shop often means your going back home the same day with either a repaired or replaced iPhone - when relying on your iPhone for all things important and for work, this is therefore crucial and the competitors just can’t compete against that.

However if the nature of the fault/issue with a new model handset is related to a general design flaw or mass manufacture/mass batch flaw, then you can be left to feel like your not being helped and it’s all in your mind.

Just got a new iPhone 11! and it’s done it on there so not fixed as I installed 14.7.1.

Had it on my IPad mini 5th gen and was paranoid that my device was compromised as battery over heated and nothing running in the background, app was closing by them selfs. I transferred it from my account from a 6s and the camera kept coming on for no reason (on the 6s) even tho all was turned off so factory reset iPad Extreme I know but like I said I was paranoid didn’t help. So just got a iPhone 11 Set it up on apples shop WiFi with new Apple ID today, it wouldn’t let me update until I had 50% battery witch I thought was normal so set up a vpn and anti malware but updated on my WiFi at home as I wasn’t allowed to charge it in shop. like I said I thought it was compromised. I was thinking it was a virus/ worn but it’s happens on this device so not fixed just to let you know.

if it is a virus all I can think is that it’s transferred off my old phone via Bluetooth so not happy but learnt that nothing I cans do to stops it don’t no about battery and apps on the 11 yet as it’s new but had to accept it.

been i touch with apple support and they want me to send off the iPad as sometimes I didn’t get a green dot when recording sometimes I did and like I said battery and apps playing up.

so will let everyone know what apple comes back with. Not up to nothing just paranoid and value my privacy.

hope it help everyone that’s paranoid
