Macbook Pro Help

My macbook is starting to run slow and I have read about cleanup apps, etc.....and also read that antivirus and cleanup apps aren't needed to optimize my performance. Being a noob....where should I start to get this thing cleaned up, tuned up and running well again?

Thanks for your help!

If you look at the report it says you are running Avast, Trend Micro and Clean My Mac.

So the first thing to do would be to get the full uninstall instructions for each of these

apps and uninstall them.

Mac do not need anti-virus or cleaning apps.

They slow you down and can often flag up files which you may be tempted to delete

where in fact they are needed system files.

Look at the Clean Up section and remove the delete the files,

their paths an location are indicated.

You have many 32bit apps on your mac, as you are running Catalina

which does not run 32bit apps they are useless unless you can update

them to 64bit, contact the apps developers if they can't be updated

remove them.

Uninstalling those anti-virus apps and Clean My Mac will free up memory because they are using it constantly, in the background. They are checking every file that is in use (and maybe some that are not) and every bit of internet traffic to/from your computer for viruses that can affect PCs but not Macs, so this is a waste. They can also cause functionality problems on the Mac.

A Macbook Pro with Catalina uses very good memory management. To release memory, you can close (shut down) programs not actively in use, especially browsers like Chrome, Firefox, which are known for using a lot of memory; or at least close tabs and windows in the browsers when not needed. Also MS-Office programs. You can configure some of these programs to reopen the last open windows when you reopen them, so you can pick up easily where you left off and not lose anything. Also -- restarting your Mac maybe once per week or even more often, will help some, depending on how you are using it. Restarting can help when software is not well written and "leaks" memory, or does not release it properly. I have seen such "leaks" with Firefox, especially when tabs and windows are left open for days or longer. Some web sites are actually playing videos (site content and/or ads) continuously and these use up memory and computer resources, slowing things down.

Trend Micro uninstaller: https://helpcenter.trendmicro.com/en-us/article/tmka-14475

Definitely uninstall it. If this uninstaller isn't the right one, Trend Micro has other uninstallers on their site.

Memory Clean is a $10 app that presumably "cleans" your Mac's memory and helps it run faster. It might work but I would remove it, the MacOS has built in processes honed over many years to carefully manage memory and I would not perturb that. Keep track of your install code in case you want to reinstall it, but the idea here is to remove all these extras to try to get your system back to the way Apple designed it.

The anti-virus apps do not accomplish anything on a Mac and can only hurt by bogging it down. They check every byte that flows anywhere on your Mac or to/from the internet. The Catalina OS isolates the system files to a separate small volume from the volume with all your personal files and installed software. You can't even modify that system file volume (unless using Apple's certified installers with an administrator account) yourself.

You must uninstall these apps fully, simply deleting them is not enough you have to

get the full uninstall instructions form the developers of those apps Avast Trend Micro and CleanMyMac.

Remove the Memory Clean app, you can simply delete that from your Applications folder.

The mac does not need any added help to manage the RAM memory.

If you open the Activity Monitor app which is in your Applications> Utilities folder

and click on the Memory tab, at the bottom of that window you will see a graph

of the memory usage. If it is green then you have no concerns. If it goes amber then your

mac is working hard but it is using a lot of memory. If it goes red then your mac is beginning

to run out of memory, at that point you should think about reducing the number of apps

open and reducing the number of tabs open in internet browsers.

Your mac is designed to use the RAM as efficiently as possible, so let it do that.

A lot of people install an app to alleviate a perceived problem, the problem does not go

away so they try another app, the problem does not go away, they install another

app. In no time you have apps installed that are all working against your mac operating

system causing slow downs, beach balling, hair pulling and writing posts here.

Use your mac wisely, you'll have more fun. Learn about your mac

you paid a lot of money for it, they are not scary.

Awesome advice, thank you so much.

I am working on updating what apps I can to 64 bit right now and cleaning house with the rest. Already uninstalled all the Avast stuff, but couldn't find the Trend stuff that it said was running. Got rid of Clean My Mac too. Seems to be doing a bit better already. I have an app called "Memory Clean" on my mac as well - should I ditch it?

Thanks! You folks are awesome!
