magic keyboard space key brings up menu items

After I connected the magic keyboard with my iPad Pro, when using Pages, the space bar brings up - and tabs through menus instead of inserting a space. What’s causing this?

Probably some setting in the Accessibility area. Check

Settings >Accessibility > Keyboards > full Keyboard Access > commands

remove “space bar” from the “activate” field.
