Why don’t I see the headphone icon on my iPhone 12 mini when they are connected?

With an iPhone with Face ID it is shown in the Control Center (at the top right).
To open Control Center, swipe down from the top right of the screen.
I assume that the reason it isn't shown at the top of the home screen is due to lack of space.
