uninstalling avast
I am unable to uninstall Avast. I have located in finder - applications and moved to trash but on trying to install a new version of Avast am told that I have not uninstalled the old version.
iMac, macOS 10.12

If you can, drop the application from your trash back into the Applications folder.
Then run Avast and from the Avast Security menu, select the Uninstall option.

Could not find Avast anywhere in my system. I had emptied the trash can. But thanks for the suggestion.
in the meantime I used the uninstaller feature of Mackeeper which had been previously removed from the iMac (somehow?) and it located the rump of Avast and got rid of it. Eureka. It’s like getting rid of hair lice!!

Um. If I were you I would remove all parts of MacKeeper ASAP. And run a Malwarebytes check (use the free version).
