Are Screen Protector Safe for Macbook Air?

Are screen protectors safe for macbook in general? I have a macbook air m1 and i am scared that it will get smudges and scratches that's why i want to use a screen protector. But, i have heard that it is not advisable, specially for retina display. That's why i am hoping that someone can answer my question, thank you!
