Just buying it does not make it associated with your iPhone.
It is the iPhone the Apple Watch is paired with and the Apple ID that it is signed into that affect where the messages come from.
Assuming it is a cellular Apple Watch, so...
The Apple Watch shares the iPhone's phone number, and the carriers that support the Apple Watch charge a monthly fee. In the U.S. the fee is $10 per month. Here is a list of carriers that support the Apple Watch:
