Convert AppleWorks 6.2.2 for Win to Word or OO for Win

Is there ANY utility or script that will convert Appleworks 6 files to Word or Open Office files on the Windows platform?

AFAIK, DataViz only goes to AW 5 for Windows.

I knew that. That is why I specified version 6 and the fact that it is on Windows. There are a few things that will convert on OSX.

We purchased a site license of AW 6 a few years ago and it just has not performed as promised and we are switching to Star Office / Open Office and I need to easily convert my teachers cwk documents to a format for OO, which is most likely going to be Word.

Yes, a "save as" is the only option to convert from AW 6 to Word or Excel on a Windows machine at this time, that I know about, anyway. However, have you ever tried to tell a teacher they have to convert all of their hundreds of AW documents on their own? Multiply that by 100 teachers who are already t.o.ed at some other technology changes our school has made and whose machines don't run AW all that swiftly and then you can appreciate why I was really hoping a batch file or script or conversion program existed that would simplify matters. 😉 The best solution would be if there was a built-in translator in Star Office or Open Office that would handle AW 6 files.

No, I haven't been in the position of having to face a hundred to'd teachers under those circumstances, but I have been on the other side of similar tech changes at a school. You have my sympathy.

Yes it would, but that's something that would have to come from the Star Office/ OpenOffice.org side, and I'm afraid that AppleWorks just isn't on their radar. OOo and Star do have support sites, and a question on one of those might bring results.

Another possibility, if you have access to a Mac (with AW 6) to do the translations, would be to use an AppleScript to direct the batch conversions. This wouldn't complete the translation into OOo or Star Office native form, but would get them to the stage where OOo/SO could read them. The script itself is outside my skills area, but there are others here who might be able to handle it.

Barry

The current DataViz products for both mac and pc
platforms say they support only up to AW version 5.

For the PC that's true, but not for the Mac. MacLinkPlus has been able to read AppleWorks 6 files since Version 12.0 in August 2000. So you could may be able to use the batch translation feature to help ease the pain.

If you're willing to keep at least one Mac around then the following options might be useful.

You could write an AppleScript to batch convert AppleWorks document to Word documents. Though T&B appear to have a script that already does this are part of their Enhancement Pack for AppleWorks.

Another Mac option is OneClickConvert.
