SSD format that works for Iphone IOS 14.3

So I have an external Sandisk SSD Extreme Pro drive that works well with my Macs and also with my iPad Pro 12 (14.3). With my iPad even with APFS encrypted. However I tried all (unencrypted) formats like ExFat, APFS , Mac OS extended, .. but the drive is not visible on my Iphone 11Pro (14.3). I am using the original Apple camera connector with power supply connected.

Any idea how I can access the SSD from my phone? Is there even an encrypted option?

iPad can read it because it has a USB-C port. iPhones don't use that port and can't connect to it.

I connect the SSD with a USB-C to USB cable and then to the camera connector. So there is no way to connect the SSD to the Iphone?

iPhones use a Lightning port.
